Get Ready for Fall Fun with this cute spooky cat foam pumpkin. This decorated pumpkin is great for day or night use! I used a foam pumpkin so it can be used year after year, and will last through the whole season without rotting. To me, using a foam pumpkin that lasts makes it worth the effort.
Here is how I made this spooky cat pumpkin:
First: Get a carve-able hollow craft pumpkin from a local craft store. Start by carving out the top in a small circle around the stem.
Next: Using an crafting knife, carve out the circle and edges around the cat. Then I using small sharp tools, I scraped out a thin layer of the foam, taking off the orange layer and some of the foam. It is good to have it uneven so it can resemble moon when lit.
TIP: BE CAREFUL WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES TO PREVENT SLICING YOUR HAND!!!
Using a strong tape such as duct tape, tape off top and carved areas. This will keep them from getting painted. Then I stuck toothpicks inside the holes. This will prevent paint from getting inside the holes while painting.
Once paint is fully dry, I sprayed a few coats of glitter spray paint. I chose not to add glitter with glue because it gets messy and tends to shed everywhere! Let the paint dry for at least 24 hrs. Then pull off tape carefully and pull out toothpicks. Now you have a cute spooky pumpkin that looks good with your fall decor during the day or a cool lit pumpkin at night.
NOTE: THIS PUMPKIN IS FLAMMABLE LIGHT WITH A SMALL LED BATTERY LIGHT.
Here is the finished pumpkin! You could take more time than I did and perfect the circle area and paint any black areas that the tape may have removed. I left it as is because I felt it looked a little more like a realistic moon.
Can you notice that when I wasn’t looking someone stuck two toothpicks in the moon area, and gouged an area above the cat that I tried to pix for the picture…. kids are funny sometimes!
